Hampton Christian Middle/High School

Welcome to 6th grade!

Sunday, June 8, 2014

If you're reading this on Sunday and you have matchbox cars, could you send a few in?

We won't use until Tuesday, but it'll be hard to test out our race tracks with no cars!

Math Exam tomorrow.  Get lots of rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and just show me what you know.  You've got this, class!  I can't wait to show you off!

Blessings and hugs….

Thursday, June 5, 2014

Yes, there's History and Math and Science and

FLOUR BOMBS!!

Wednesday, June 4, 2014

Thanks to all the 6th graders who behaved quite well 1st and 3rd periods while I got to visit with a friend just in from England!

A math review packet was given during 1st period.  Students are instructed to complete whatever they didn't finish in class for homework.

Next week, we're going to do an activity to explore speed & velocity.  If you have any matchbox cars lying around, could we borrow them on Monday??

Tuesday, June 3, 2014

Class, don't forget:  Pizza for lunch tomorrow!  You had the most spectators at the football games this season.  Way to go HCA!

This was fun the other day!  Jeffrey, what in the world!?!?!

How did it go by so quickly?  I can't believe "my" 6th graders are becoming rising 7th graders already!

So, what do you need to know?  Our schedule is DIFFERENT than the rest of the school's.  First of all, we don't have the privilege yet of not coming to school even if exempt from an exam.  Students should still be in school for a full day on Monday.  Half day (pick up by 12:05) Tues-Thurs.

This week- normal week.  I'll try to keep homework light!

June 9th-12th
Monday- Math exam
Tuesday- Science exam
Wednesday- History exam
Thursday- regular 1/2 LAST day!

I'm hoping to fit in a few fun activities after exams since we'll have another couple of hours Mon-Wed. Stay tuned!

Thursday, May 29, 2014

I was so proud today!  Your kiddos tackled a math placement test with gusto and excelled.  I'm excited to share the results with you.

Students will be given the option of taking their spelling test tomorrow or next week.  We've been concentrating so heavily on math and history, that spelling has gone by the wayside.   So……. if you've been studying at home anyway, it won't have been in vain, but I'd like to get a shot at practicing a bit in the classroom too.

I can't believe we've only got one more whole week after tomorrow……

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

Tuesday:

No Math Homework!

Lucky Ducks, I tell ya!

Monday, May 19, 2014

"But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving,considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness."
James 3:17-18

We're having some great discussions in class about true wisdom and I'm looking forward to talking together more about the issues raised in the book of James. Read along with us and keep up with the conversation!

Here's some fun pictures from last week.  Way to go everybody!!

Saturday, May 17, 2014

Looks like a beautiful day for J-Lab!  You're sure to find something that interests you (even if it's just the taco truck for lunch!)

Students will receive extra credit in Math for their attendance.  (Just send in a note on Monday, please.)

Wednesday, May 14, 2014

Look out for those Danger Twins!!

Awesome job making your (and your friend's) costume, Jamie!  Under cape:  Jenna!!

 Hey, we're really ALL superheroes!

"I'm BATMAN!!"    Cool, Pierce!

Saturday, May 10, 2014

If you've got a soccer player, don't forget to check out the pictures here:

The last game I had to take with my iPhone, but usually we're lucky enough to have Michael Bachman's dad take professional ones!

Friday, May 9, 2014

What a FUN day!  6th grade is the best!

Next week is Spirit Week leading up to Field Day on Friday afternoon.

Monday:  Pajama Day  (be appropriate, folks!)
Tuesday:  TV Character Day
Wednesday: Superhero Day
Thursday:  Come as you're not (example, a "sports freak" might come "nerdy")
Friday:  Field Day colors (try to wear a shirt mostly that color)

There are 2 Field Day teams for 6th Grade:

Blue
Pierce
Alanna
Jeffrey
Erin
Kevin
Jenna
Jacob

Yellow
Ava
Jon
Jamie
Janiya
Triston
Indea
David
Mikey

And all the while, we'll be looking at the book of James for wisdom in how to react to trials and temptations.  In History, we'll finish looking at American history in Chapter 14 and test late in the week.  Math will bring us ratio problems.  If students get THAT part, they've practically got it all!

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me:

Happy Mother's Day, moms!
Blessings!

Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Don't be late on Thursday!!
Mmmm…. This is going to be yummy.  The Warrior CafĆ© is open on Thursday morning!  Students can sip hot cocoa or juice, munch on a muffin, and enjoy some music while we prepare for chapel to begin.
All items are 50 cents and must be purchased by 7:50, so get here early!

Parents, you're welcome to join us!

Thanks for your support with the Geometry Project.  Sixth Grade Land looks terrific!  Feel free to stop by our hallway and take a peek.  Our students quite creative.

Oh, and by the way….. if you're asked for duct tape…. well, it's sort of a top secret project……
(I'll do my best to make sure they don't tape me to the chair and set me outside in the sun for the day. On second thought, I might enjoy that!!)

Blessings to you and your family!

Monday, April 28, 2014

I forgot to add the pictures from our "Peep-a-pults"!!  Right before break, students creatively tried to figure out the most effective catapult design to launch a "peep" highest, longest, and most accurately!
Sorry, I couldn't get any action shots…… I was laughing too hysterically!

….and…. we're back!
It's so good to see these smiling faces again!  We had a great time this morning talking about the break and now I hope we're ready to get down to business and do our best until the end of the year!

"Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people."
Ephesians 6:7

Coming up:
  • Field Trip Wednesday to Jefferson Lab/ lunch @ Golden Coral
  • Math tutoring Wednesday
  • Away soccer games Tuesday and Thursday
  • Geometry Project due NEXT Tuesday, May 6th

We have a BIG History test this Friday including chapters 9-13.  We will be reviewing this week, but students should be looking over their notes at home.

Monday, April 14, 2014

We can get there!  Spring Break will be here soon!

This week we'll be reviewing in Math.  By the end of the week, students will be multiplying and dividing mixed numbers with no problem.  (right?!)  Area of complex figures and Scientific Notation are also on the list.  Lucky kids!

We'll finish our novel A Fathers Promise.  I think most of us are sad to see it end!  The "notebook" and review questions are due at the end of class on Tuesday.  Vocabulary and Comprehension quiz on Wednesday.

No spelling with the short week and we'll be writing expository paragraphs in Language.

We're all looking forward to seeing Heaven is for Real on Thursday.  (and I have one other surprise for the class!)

Blessings to you and your family!

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

Congratulations, Hampton Christian Co-ed Soccer for their WIN on Tuesday!

The students are doing SO WELL with Terra Nova Testing this week!  I'm impressed with their diligence.   Keep sending them to bed early and filling them up in the morning with nutritious goodness.

I had to leave early due to illness yesterday, so graded papers will go home today (Tuesday) instead.  Sorry for the delay.

There's a home co-ed soccer game today @ 4pm.  Come on out and support the many 6th graders on the team!

Tutoring is open on Thursday to any student who would like a little extra help.

Enjoy your week!

For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. Romans 5:10 NLT

Monday, March 31, 2014

What an exciting day!  We praise God that no one was hurt in that small, electrical fire in the bathroom.

The students know that homework is as usual, but there's no history test tomorrow.  It will be moved to Wednesday.

As we were walking to the gym to wait for parents, some snagged a photo opportunity!

Sunday, March 30, 2014

Thanks to so many of you who were able to make it to the auction on Saturday night!  What a huge success and YOU were an integral part in making that happen!  Special thanks to Mrs. Chapman and Mrs. Hedger, two of our own 6th grade parents who rolled up their sleeves and got things done! (looking stylish I might add!)

This week in 6th grade, we'll be starting a new novel to be read partly in school, partly at home.  I implore you to read WITH your child.  You will be captivated with the way Scripture is a natural and integral part of the lives the characters who are in such peril!

What's left?
No spelling this week.
Tutoring on Thursday.
and
Standardized Testing starts NEXT Monday.

(That means that Spring Break is within reach!)

Monday, March 24, 2014

In case the order form didn't make it home in your child's backpack…..

Spring Picture Day is Wednesday!
(...and here's learning to graph function tables today!)

Sunday, March 23, 2014

Have you heard about Genius Hour yet?  I hope your child is talking about it!  We'll set an hour aside each week for students to be able to think about what interests them, form a question, research, and show what was learned.
Check out www.geniushour.com

We'll need your help gathering supplies and possibly research material.  If you'd like to come tell us or show us something that could help us during Genius Hour, let me know!

Friday, March 21, 2014

After an awesome worship and chapel time (and some math
history, and spelling of course…) we had some frog finders and soccer players!

What a great day in 6th grade!

Monday, March 17, 2014

It's Spiritual Emphasis Week!

Parents are encouraged to join us any morning this week for student led worship and chapel beginning at 8:20.  Please pray for all that God will do in the hearts of our students!

On Thursday, it's "dollar-no-collar" day.  Students can pay $1 and wear a Christian T-shirt instead of chapel dress.

We'll be reviewing in Math and History for tests on Wednesday.  The Civil War is covered in Chapter 10, the Western Expansion and Inventions in Chapter 11.  Map Masteries 13-14 are also included.

Tutoring is not "open" this week.  Rather, I will invite those who I feel need specific instruction.
Please feel free to call or email me with any concerns you have.

"Those who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of your wonders.  You make the dawn and the sunset SHOUT for JOY!"  Psalm 65:8

Saturday, March 15, 2014

I am a proud teacher!  WOW! Our students did a terrific job at the Math Olympics on Friday, which incidentally was Pi Day!

Congratulations to all who participated.  It truly is an honor to even partake in the event.

If you'd also remember us for this Sunday afternoon, it's Hampton Christian's annual Open House from 2-4 pm.  We'd love for you to bring a friend or neighbor by to see us!

Monday, March 10, 2014

Yay! We got to play outside today.  It was wonderful.

While it's not as fun as playing outside, this Morse code translator was pretty popular:
http://morsecode.scphillips.com/jtranslator.html

Some of the students asked that I post the link.

Also, reading vocabulary words are up on www.studystack.com  -quiz Thursday

Username= mrsboisvert  Password= room15
Scroll to the end of the list for "Vocab 3/10."

Sunday, March 9, 2014

This week promises to be one of the most compelling yet!  We've got poetry, we've got data collection, men from the Second Great Awakening like Charles Finney and Peter Cartwright, and cool inventions like the telegraph.

…and soccer starts on Monday!
…and there's NO SCHOOL on Friday! (well, unless you're off to the Math Olympics with me!)

Wednesday, March 5, 2014

2 hour delay today!

Just got the call…… School starts @ 10:00 Wednesday.

Saturday, March 1, 2014

It's March already!  Now if it warms up, we'll be in business!

Coming up:

  • Hampton Christian's auction!  The 6th grade is auctioning an electric scooter.  Please consider contributing to the cost.
  • Missionary books should be finished by the end of the week to allow time to work on the report without rushing!
  • If your child is playing co-ed soccer and did NOT play a sport this year, a physical as well as the following permission form is required.  Soccer starts Monday, March 10.

           http://www.hamptonchristianschools.com/Athletics/forms/MedicalRelease.pdf

Friday the 14th, there is no school due to parent-teacher conferences.  However, I will be traveling with our Math Olympians to Fredericksburg that day.  If you would like a conference, please contact the office to make an appointment @ 838-7427.  I can be available before, after, and even during school and would look forward to talking with you.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!  I think I see the sun………

Thursday, February 27, 2014

It's been quite an interesting day!  I hope it's not too late to confirm your child's happy news:
NO MATH HOMEWORK TONIGHT!

We enjoyed a fantastic chapel today with a message from the Youth Pastor of All Generations Church.  He challenged us to be more "real" with God and make sure we're not just "going through the motions."  Pastor prayed with us and encouraged us in knowing God loves us just how we are and he'll use us how he's made us!

While many flooded the prayer room after chapel, we entertained Pastor's youngest son so he and his wife could be free to minister to others.  We managed some language arts today and a bit of history, but the math test has been postponed until tomorrow.

We're looking forward to Grandparent's Day tomorrow!

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Totally true!
Plus, I wanted to tell you that I added a "Missionary Book Report" tab right up there next to the "Homework" tab.  (just in case your darling has misplaced the original form!)

and why didn't I think about this before…….
The Bible memory verse will be listed up there too.
Hope that's helpful!

Friday, February 21, 2014

Indea made FIRST place in the regional Spelling Bee today in her grade level!
Hampton Christian made a good showing with a 2nd and 3rd place on the 7th grade level and Emma Keller in 8th grade going to the State Championship!

We're proud of you, Indea!!!

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

The only homework tonight is to finish the persuasive essay that we started in class yesterday.
Have a great night!

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Thanks, SeƱora Rivera, for helping us to demonstrate how we are all connected in the love of Christ!  We need to work together, to help one another, and to encourage a friend any chance we get!

Monday, February 17, 2014

I have to admit to thinking about skipping my Old Testament reading in my devotional time this morning.  It was all about the offerings given to the Lord, but I don't particularly enjoy reading about the blood and guts! (and there are A LOT of blood and guts)  There are also very particular instructions.
I read on, and I'm glad I did.  "When you have followed these instructions from the Lord, the glorious presence of the Lord will appear to you." Leviticus 9:6

I want to be in His presence…… so let's ask, "What, O Lord, are your instructions for me today?"

It's a short week this week, so we're going to make it worth our while!  We'll skip the Spelling this week (try not to weep out loud) and no reading vocabulary (again-- no weeping!)

No open tutoring this week.  We'll resume next week.
So what WILL we do?

  • Look at Paul's example of contentment in the book of Colossians.
  • Math!!  Distributive Property, fraction-decimal-percent equivalents, and add mixed measures
  • Write a persuasive essay, revise, edit, and publish it.
  • Begin a unit on the US Civil War
Students should be well underway with their missionary book report and memorizing Philippians 2:5. The quiz will be on Thursday this week with no school Monday.

As always, feel free to email me or send me a note with any concerns or questions!  Blessings to your family.

Sunday, February 9, 2014

It's Spirit Week!
...and no one is more glad than I am to wear PAJAMAS on Monday!  Wahoo!

Here's the schedule for the rest of the week:
Tuesday:  Twin Day
Wed:  Wacky Tacky
Thurs: Blast from the Past
Fri:  Blue and Gold day!

Join us for the Homecoming Game on Friday night and cheer on our Basketball team!

-A missionary book report will be assigned tomorrow to accompany the books we picked out in the library on Friday.  Students will have plenty of time to read and complete as long as they keep up with their reading.
-Math tutoring is on Thursday until 4 pm.

p.s.- we've been learning (or reviewing for many) our states and capitals.  Have you seen this interactive practice game?  I like how it shows you the states that you need more practice.

We're back!

Homework is posted, but the Calendar has NOT been updated yet.  I'd like to see how we do on Monday and how much review is needed.  Quizzes for this week are posted on the homework page.

I'll tutor on Thursday for those who would like to stay.

If I can help you or answer any questions, please feel free to email me any time:
pboisvert@hamptonchristianschools.com

Blessings!!

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Are you enjoying the snow? We've been having a blast at my house! (-in between being lazy, of course.)

If I hear anything about Friday, I'll post here.  Seemed obvious we wouldn't have school today.  As for me, I'm not going to be the bad guy who shovels Hampton Christian to "open" status!

I'm inclined to move the Spelling test to Monday. (I did tell the kids to be ready on Fri, but we haven't had ANY practice together.)  Other than that, we'll just catch up next week with our regular routine.

Maybe somebody wants to READ today???  Here's some of my favorites that you don't have to go to the bookstore to get….. Just download 'em!  :-)

  • Peak by Roland Smith
  • Ida B by Katherine Hannigan (girlish book)
  • Divergent by Veronica Roth (adventure non-stop!)
  • A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle  (this book is too a favorite of the character in the book  I'm reading aloud in class)
  • A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck  (hilarious!!!)
  • Holes by Louis Sachar (I always thought kids already read this.  Even if they saw the movie- read!)

Class,
Play Scrabble, and cards, and hide-n-seek, and bake something, don't forget to read your Bible, write a letter to somebody, paint, make up a board game, stay off the computer!!!!!!
Love you~!!

Monday, January 27, 2014

Happy Monday

In my attempt to rearrange the schedule this week, I didn't fit "graded papers" in the mix today!
Sorry about that.  I hope to send them home on Tuesday.  Enjoy your day!

Friday, January 24, 2014

What a crazy week!
I hope you and your family enjoyed some time off.  It's hard to believe it's Friday!

Sunday, January 12, 2014

Exam week is almost upon us!  While 6th graders do not adhere to the exam schedule other than 2nd Period Science, we do try to ease them in to what their experience may be like next year by giving some exams.

Please refer to the calendar to check the schedule:  http://tinyurl.com/npum488

We do have HALF DAYS starting Wednesday, January 22nd.  Students are dismissed at noon.
Beginning next year, students are not required to come to school during the period for which they are exempt from an exam.  This year, however, 6th graders report for all exam periods.

In class, we'll review extensively.  I try to keep the exams as "low-key" as possible while still stressing the importance of good study habits.  It's my hope that this will help them to transition smoothly next year to a full load of exams.

"If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your dwelling.  For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go."

Psalm 91: 9-11

This was our thankfulness board.  Tons and tons of verses to show how good God is!

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

There IS a little Spelling and History homework tonight.  Most students already completed in class or did their Spelling yesterday.  Just wanted you to be aware.

Hope your week is going well; mine is with your kiddoes!

Sunday, January 5, 2014

It's going to be a terrific week!  We continue to look into how wide and deep and long is the love of Christ as we look at Paul's journeys to encourage the Corinthians.  In Math, we'll be finding the area of complex figures and triangles and using information we gather to design different types of graphs.  The Literature Circles seemed to be a hit the first day.  We'll keep our nose in an engaging book or two this week as well.

Tutoring will resume on Thursday after school until 4:00.

You may have heard that Liberty is doing a parenting seminar.  If not, I wanted to make sure you knew YOU are invited.  Pastor Grant and his wife are sure to bring something for everyone.

Have a week full of God's abundant blessings!

Thursday, January 2, 2014

Welcome back to school!  God has much in store for us and others in the coming year, so let's see what it is!

No homework this week (it's too hard to go back, right?)  BUT, we do have a History Test on Tuesday.  (correction from the planner--  Tuesday test on Chapter 7-- NOT 6!-- sorry!)

It was great to see student's smiling faces this morning.  I did miss them!
 Hey, tomorrow is Friday!!
Blessings!
